Post your question here if any , will try best provide a suggestion and opinion. Logistics do not limit only full container load ocean freight above. It is very wide . There are trucking, port charges, clearance , handling , seafreight, airfreight, less container load and etc.
do you have any update for Kuching Port to Mersin / Turkey, TQ
Dear VK
Thank you for this information. Actually I am doing research on this topic.
Do you know the freight charges to middle east(from port klang) since 1980's?
or can you suggest me anyone that i can refer with?
-aswadi-
Sorry , i do not have records that long. From the 90's to now, take yearly average , the rate do not changes much . UP and Down affected by fuel , but as well affected by demand, equipments and inventory imbalance.
dear vk,is the rate above is the indicative total shipping cost or there will be other cost applcable. tx. mnir
It is only the OCEAN FREIGHT. There are other local Port charges, custom clearance and trucking charges and inland charges for both end. I am in mid of preparing the average local Malaysia Import and Export charges for Sea freight. Already posted in this blog are the local charges for Air freight. ( Air cargo). If you intend to do export or import cost , take note of the others charges
Well done! Any idea on the ocean freight to Japan and South Korea?
Ocean Freight from Port Klang to Japan Port , Osaka,Tokyo,Yokohama,Nagoya,Moji,Kobe have not changes much at range USD250->USD300/20ft and USD450->USD500/40ft . As for Port Klang to Busan at range USD180->USD200/20ft and USD350->USD400/40ft
Hi VK,
I want import goods from indonesia. The total weight is 11ton. CNF PORT KLANG.
Can you suggest me the best forwarder?
Hi Kayrol,
You can choose a forwarder from SFFLA ( Selangor Freight Forwarders and Logistics Association) member directory http://www.sffla.com
You may appoint up to maximum 3 custom broker , and renewable each every 6 months. Since i do not know where your office located , suggest you pick one nearest to you for easier transaction and documents transfer, especially if this is your first time import/export.
Cargo 11 tons , but what is your volume (m3)? I think you will need a 20ft container. Please let the forwarder know your commodity too, just in case your goods may need Malaysia import permit or prohibited.
Hi there
I am fairly new to the industry and would greatly appreciate some guidance.
I would like to know most cost effective method of delivery by ocean freight(i.e company, cost) to Australia. Product delivering is consumer goods weighing approx 20-50kg.
Furthermore, could you kindly give a rough estimate of other associated costs (Port charges, custom clearance and trucking charges) on the Malaysian side for such cargo
Hi,you need door to door service ? Pick up from your door and deliver to your receiver door at Australia? If so, 20-50kgs (assuming this is small packages - a dense cargo) then cheapest is via courier service such as fedex, dhl, pos laju and etc. ( you can get the estimate charge from a call to their office or even on their website).
Assuming cargo location in Klang Valley, A normal freight forwarding service (Which have minimum charges) for an Less container load cargo will cost you appproximately RM3000++ for a minimum small package cargo. If you get courier service quote more than RM3000 , then you can call any freight forwarding company for your goods delivery.
Hi VK, r u with any forwarder or line from klang?
I am in the logistics industry. Hope my pages will able to help someone out there.
hi hope u can help me with this.. do u know whats the on going charges for empty container storage in port klang?
Do you have any SOC rate?
Hi Lenny,
Storage charge for MTY container inside Port or at private depot?
Mty container storage charges by the Port ( inside Port ) at RM4/20ft and RM8/40ft per day. You can refer to Port tariff http://www.northport.com.my/docs/tariff.pdf
While for private depot, some will give as low as RM1/20ft and RM2/40ft a day with some free time. ( do not forget other charges applied too, such as LOLO - which may cost up to RM20/20ft or more) .
Hi there, i am not writing on SOC freighting at moment, since i wrote this blog as to guide new exporter or importer; to have a place to discuss their doubt on logistics requirement. I do understand sometimes, shipper need SOC container too, when consignee request. As an idea,
SOC container rate usually applied same as COC container rate via most Main Line Operator. Exceptional for feeder operator ( who may offer slightly lower than COC market rate ( approximately USD100 to USD150 different but at a lesser service. Usually applied for Free in and Free Out basis ( SOC container owner need to arrange discharging of their own container with the Port of both loading and discharging),without Bill of Lading issue and etc.
hi
does anyone know what is freight charges from Seoul, Korea to East Malaysia?
Thank u
Hi Gene, Korea to East Malaysia .Let say, Ocean Freight ONLY from Seaport Busan Korea to Kuching Or Kota Kinabalu will be about USD1000 (RM3200)/20ft and USD2000(RM6400/40ft). Transit time approximately 20 days ( since the container need to transit at Port Klang. Other Ports such as Sibu, Bintulu,Labuan , Sandakan and Tawau will be slightly more expensive (Add on around RM1000/20ft and RM2000/40ft against Kuching or Kota Kinabalu rate) . While for Miri Trucking via Bintulu and Lahad Datu trucking via Tawau will need to add on approximately RM2000/20ft and RM4000/40ft on top of the Kuching or Kota Kinabalu rate.

May I know the quotation for shipping car Toyota Avanza from Port Klang to Kota Kinabalu in August? thank you.
Hi , cheapest option is via RORO vessel (Vechile will be drive onto the ship)Approximately RM4000 budget will be good. Some negotiation with your forwarder may have some discount. ( depend on other service you may need or not need -such as inspection, driving car from your home to the port and etc)
Please take note, NO Other goods or personal effect items allowed inside the vechile. HEAVY custom penalty if found any. If you have some goods need to send , please consult your forwarder to make declaration or ship separately.
Dear Vk,
I would import porcelain (fragile things) from Bangladesh (Chittagong Port) which is loaded in 40ft container FCL (42,000 pieces). What is the charges that i would require/ ask from forwarding agent? Do they will charge me by per container or by weight of 42,000 pieces porcelain?
Hi , for logistics costing , you will be charges per unit of booking you made. If you book 1 x 40ft container. Charges will be base on per 40ft . What is your shipment term. FOB or CIF ? If FOB Chittangong. Mean you will need to pay
1) Ocean Freight : Chittangong to Port Klang + Cargo insurance ( you need to purchase cover)
2) Local Port Charges at Port Klang
3) Forwarding and Custom clearance fees at Port Klang
4) Custom duties. ( Please take note - Porcelain ware related to contructions such as washing basin and etc - you need permit from CIDB to import ) . Porcelains items depend on what kind of items , will be dutiable.Custom duties as high as 30% import duty to as low as 5% import duty and 10% sales tax applied.
Calculated per kg basis. Therefore advice to itemize each type of items per their value.
5) Trucking - Haulage charges to delivery + all related such as labour etc if you need.
If your shipment term CIF Chittangong , then you will need to pay all above , except the Ocean Freight and Insurance.
If your shipment term CNF Chittangong, then you will need to pay all above ,except the Ocean Freight ONLY. YOU need to purchase cargo insurance cover.
Dear VK,
How much is the insurance cost from Chittagong to Port Klang? Local Port Charges at Port Klang is base on what? How to find it?
Hi, for local charges and haulage charges at Port Klang, you can find it in my other post in June (Malaysia seafreight import/export local charges ) and Malaysia Haulage Charges
As for Insurance, you need to purchase this from your forwarder or any marine insurance company. The cost would be at a range of 0.3% to 1.0% of 110% on your cargo declared value.
are you a forwarding company?
I am planning to sent a small 6 pallets goods from Tianjin to Port Klang. Do you have any idea which forwarding company can do the paper work to collect the goods from port klang and sent to my store?
Please email me. Thanks.

Advice to get this done before cargo arrive Port Klang. The custom broker appointment to custom take up to 3 working days to process , with condition all your documents are in order. Your goods will incur unnecessary port storage if this delayed. Without custom broker appointment approval from the custom , the forwarding company cannot process your paper clearance.
Hi,
I am planning to import some products from China and have them delivered to my company in Ipoh. The products that I ll be importing take up a 40'HQ container.
Since this is the first I am importing, I would like some advice what is the procedure and costs involved.
The supplier in China told me that, they will get a hauler to get the 40' container to Port Qingdao. The rest will be handled by myself.
Could you please advise, what are the steps I need to take to get the 40' container from Qingdao port to my doorstep in Ipoh? Also, what are the charges involved and estimated cost ?
Appreciate your advise.
Hi, base your question , your supplier in Qingdao is offering you a FOB (free on board )price goods . You will have to pay the transport cost + cargo insurance. Your supplier responsibility is to delivery the loaded container up to stack on ship (over the ship rail). You have to nominated a shipping / forwarding company for your supplier to booking the container with.
I have reply a similar inquiry on 22nd Aug(http://malaysialogisticsbuzz.blogspot.com/2011/03/malaysia-sea-freight-local-shipping.html?showComment=1345689699286#c1706343684559553446.)
Also an import from China to Ipoh. See below i pasted the same . Ocean freight from Qingdao and Shanghai will be almost same. However due to demand and supply , changes weekly.
You are advised to check if your items require import permit from any government agency prior import arrangement.
My previous reply below.....hope it help
"Import from Shanghai a 40ft container. Prefabricated buildling items, you may get some tax discount if your China supplier can give you supporting docs for ACFTA agreement.
Base on shipping term FOB Shanghai (you need to purchase cargo insurance )Loading and local charges at China on supplier account. Ocean Freight approximately USD650 (RM2080) for a 40ft Shanghai to Port Klang.
Trucking Port Klang to Ipoh approximately RM5200 Or RM2600 if you immediate unstuff within 4 hrs. Trailer wait and return to Port Klang.
Recommend you to look for a forwarder in Ipoh itself (usually they have offices in Port Klang) You can get better costing as they usually have regular traffic rather than those from Port Klang whose truck will be MTY return , causing double fees to as high as RM5200/container.
Other charges for Port clearance at Port Klang as followed. ( Estimated ONLY. Actual depend on individual forwarder)
1)THC: RM520/40ft
2)EDI: RM30/set
3)DO: RM150/set
4)DO collection fees: RM5/set
5)Agency fee: RM130/set
6)Forwarding fees: RM150/shipment
7)Custom exam : RM100/container
8)Custom docs: RM50/set
9)GST 6% : RM18
10)SMK : RM30/shipment
11)EFT : RM25
Subject transport , custom duty , port storage and etc ( depend on agent value added service provided if any, such bank endorsement, documents collection and etc )

If i want to ship edible oil to Bandar Abbas, Iran in bulk, what is the cost that should i consider? Haulage cost from Port Klang? What is available to ship bulk carrier of edible oil, break bulk? what is the cost? Tq very much VK.
Hi,what is your volume? Edible oil are ship in many option. Breakbulk vessel (tanker) if volume are big, otherwise within 20000 litres thru ISO Tank , Flexi-tank, Flexi-Bag or smaller storing units, 200 litres drum to smaller jelly can - stuffed into 20ft GP container. Shipping edible oil need to consider previous cargo in the re-use storage units (The tanker , ISO tank, Flexi-Tank and etc). Beside chemical contamination, halal or kosher certification may cause cargo reject by buyer. Quite often they are shipped in new jelly can.
If ship by GP container, you can estimated the cost thru other similar posting here.
Your shipment are to IRAN. You may need to keep track of your documentation requirement. Shipping line may not accept your transport booking.
Check with your forwarder ( procedure changes )
Eg of some current requirement.
Documents required:
1. Commercial Invoice
2. Packing List
3. End User certificate
4. Forwarder Certificate of Compliance ( if HBL is involve)
5. Shipping Instruction (without container number & seal number during pre-booking)
Item 1 to item 7 are to be fulfilled.

Hi VK,
Great blog :)
I'm trying to chose the best location for a distribution warehouse to serve Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Choices are Pasir Gudang, Singapore and Port Klang.
Delivery time, Delivery costs, and storage/operating costs are all important. Do you have any advice?
Considering approx 1000MT of Goods with average weight of 1MT. 70%conventional - 30% container
Cheers
Debis
Hi, this is my personal view. Hope someone out here can give some opinions too. You target delivery market is within Malaysia, to Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
In term of best costing : Port Klang due to it location and there are plenty available warehouses and vacant land too. Located centre of Peninsular Malaysia and delivery via trucking to North, South and East at average distance and price. Acceptable ship calling schedule at a weekly basis or more.
In term of delivery time and service: Singapore . Fast clearance and having more regular ship calling
Hi VK,

Dear VK,
I like to read your information. I am doing research for this topic. Do you have idea for logistic cost from Port Klang to Busan Port, Korea?
We will export copper (scrap metal) to there. How about its cost if the quantity is 1,000 metric tone which in 40ft container?
Local export charge you can obtain from my other post.
As for ocean freight Port Klang to Pusan. ( range USD50/20ft to USD150/20ft while USD100/40ft to USD200/40ft )
Yours is dense cargo . Take note on the weight limit. 20ft usually acceptable up to 22 tons , 40ft up to 25 tons.
Hope above help
hello VK, I am doing a project on exporting instant coffee to Hong Kong. I have no idea about the cost of exporting from port Klang to Hong Kong, the size of container that should be use. the packaging is 600g/per pack (each pack contains 15 sachets*40g). I am planning to export 50,000 packs to hong kong. can you give me some idea and suggestions? thx.
Hi, 600g per pack x 50,000 pack will be 30 tons. a 20ft Gp container can take max 26000 tons. Lesser weight capacity for 40ft container. Cheapest option is to ship via 2 x 20ft GP containers.
Ocean Freight PKL to Hong Kong will not be expensive ( due to equipment imbalance) . You may be charged USD50 to USD100 only per 20ft GP BUT SUBJECT to LOCAL Charges such as THC , Documents fees , Haulage and etc.
great blog post for starters like me and others & thanks. hope you can help me on this, I'd like to export cocoa powder from port of klang(m'sia) to the chennai port in india.,packaging:-

30 x 200g : L=46cm x H=16cm x W=33cm - 333 boxes.
total gross weight would be +/-5 tonnes.,
now could you kindly help me on the shipping details and the total charges that will incur if I use C.I.F as the trading method., thanking you very much in advance Sir

Hi there, I'm Esther.
I would like to ask about LCL/FCL for importing from Yokohama,Japan to Pork Klang/Pasir Gudang.
My company is about to import plastic toys like robot and figurine. Also would like to bring in DG goods such as plastic acrylic paint, enamel paint, plastic cement, spraying paints and topcoat/finishing coat spray.
What would you advise? We are currently using a freight company in Johor, which they giving us very high price. We would like to get to right freight company for long business relationship too.
I want to know what's the exact price for LCL/FCL plastic toys, general toys product and DG goods. We have all the MSDS for DG product. Is there a way to get reasonable shipment price?
Base on your experience can you provide all the fee from (EX-work/FOB) Yokohama to Port Klang/Pasir Gudang?
Hope you can help. Please email me if you can provide me with more detail. Thank you.
esther_lai@syltrinity.com
Best regards,
Esther Lai
hi thanks for the great info sir.,
unfortunately my shipping agent said FCL would be better because the consignment takes up to about three quarter of a full container. hope you can help quote the average charge for FCL. And FYI, the location of the goods is Telok Gong in Klang which is very near to Port klang.
Thanks & Regards!
Hi Esther, i have no rate from Japan port to Malaysia port on hand now. Buying ex-work terms may cost higher since it involved both end monitoring and transaction. A forwarder in Malaysia need to make some profit to cover currency ex-change and also risk on the total cost and monitoring. It means there could have been a double make up.
Why not compare CIF cost with your seller. Buying CIF Japan port will also reduce your risk , since your responsibility start only after container discharge in Malaysia.
And you will soon shipping in Hazardous class goods. It would be safer if your supplier do the arrangement . If they do not provide , you can try out more than one forwarder to offer a quote. hazardous goods involve control trucking , packing certification, freight and Port surcharges.
As for local Malaysia Port clearance, i can say that Malaysia have a very good standardize tariff and service fees. There shouldn't be must different among forwarders' offers. Only different is service level vs price paid.
Hi Abu Bakar ETR,
Ocean Freight for FCL, PKL to Chennai is at a range of USD280 to USD300/20ft and USD560 to USD600/40ft
Local charges
THC : RM340/20ft and USD520/40ft
EDI: RM30/set
BL fees :RM150/set
Telex: RM150/set
Seal charges : RM15/pcs
Local clearance varies per agents. Averagely will be around
1.Forwarding fees : Minimum RM150/shipment or RM100/container
2.Custom examination: RM80/shipment if applicable
3.Custom Documentation : RM50/shipment
GST 6% above items (1,2,3)
Custom EDI : RM30
Haulage charge Telok Gong arrange approximately RM625/container
Fumigation if there is wooden : RM800/20ft and RM1200/40ft ( if can be done your premises RM650/20ft and RM750/40ft )
FYI- Even if your goods is 3 quarter full , you still can ship via LCL if CIF price is at your advantage but your buyer on the other end will be paying high CFS price at destination. * Some party will still paying the logistics cost *.

Dear VK,
I am so glad to find your blog. Hope to get your advise on this...
My company is based in JB and we are acquiring the contract to becoming the dealer for an Italian made kitchen. We are are bringing in 4 sets of kitchen cabinets for our display (including wooden cabinetery, fittings, worktops (stone, stainless steel top, melamine top) and also some appliances like: sink, cooking hood, dishwasher and built-in fridge).
Terms: Ex-Work from Italy (Port: Anconna, Italy)
For now, we are considering a 40'GP FCL . But eventually we will consider LCL for loose order that comes in eventually.
We are currently sourcing for freight forwarders who can arrange door to door service. We have gotten a quotation from one of the freight forwarder but they are unable to advise us on the sales tax.
Would you be able to advise the import duty and sales tax that may incurr, eg: tax %, calculation based on total invoice value? Etc... This is our main concern as this will factor in our costing and we cant seem to get any info from our freight forwarder.
Do you think it's better (in terms of best costing) to have it shipped from Anconno to Port Klang then have the container hauled and delivered to Johor Bahru; or have a direct shipment from Anconna to JB? Or is there any other better alternative that you may suggest?
Is it advisable to bring in the electrical appliances, even if with small volume along with the kitchen cabinet?
Is it possible to recommend any freight forwarder?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE and sincerely I appreciate your advise. Please email me at: suann.tsp@gmail.com
Will keep on following your blog.
Regards,
Suann
Hi Suann, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013
In regards to the import tax and duties , it will be calculated per items per tariff. You question may be too subjective , which lead the forwarding agent hard to advice the estimated tax . Base on what you mentioned , eg , Wooden cabinet may subjected to 10% sales tax , while melamine type should be around 20% import duty and 10% sales tax, while e-goods household category around 30% import duty and 10% sales tax. Please take note only the items you mention may subject to import permit , such as e-goods and any natural stones or tiles.( which may have higher import tax up to 60%)
You can check the tariff from this webpage ( may not update . Just a guide). www.tariff.customs.gov.my
And in regards to prefer Port of Discharge in Malaysia . You need to compare
1) Different of Ocean Freight shipping to Port Klang and Pasir gudang or Tanjung Pelepas
2) Different of Haulage charge from Port Klang to your premises compare to from Pasir Gudang or Tanjung Pelepas to your premises.
My advice , discharge at Johor Port. Will be very much cheaper. The haulage rate different are in Thousand of ringgits. And also for easy monitoring and communication.
Hi VK,
Thanks a million for your reply.
Noted your advise for the port of discharge. I think we will discharge at Johor Port.
Meanwhile,I am checking on the tariff from the website for all possible items. For example: I searched under" wooden furniture of a kind used in kitchen", it's stated that there's no import Rate (Nil)(i assume that refers to import duty), and sales tax stated "X02". Don't quite understand what does it mean for the "X02"?
Do you think that, if i can provide a copy of the proforma invoice of the items, my freight forwarder can advise me on the import duty and sales tax? Otherwise, do i have to consult the customs office? Or, is there any other agent out there that provide this service?
Thanks in advance again for your advise.
Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013!
Regards,
Suann
Hi Suann,
You may check the tariff site few days later. Could be updating. Yes, your forwarding agent ( a custom broker) will able to give you the ESTIMATED tax . But you must take note final tax will still be on customs decision.
A freight forwarder might or might not help on custom related issue ( they are not "custom agent" and may not have the system access. There are some different in functions between a freight forwarder and a forwarding agent .
Hi VK,
Thanks for your reply. Finally I understand the difference. So, in this case, for the very 1st shipment, I guess it would be safer should i engage with a forwarding agent (normally they provide shipping service as well, right), instead of a freight forwarders, right?
Hi Suann,
A freight forwarder may also a forwarding company ( many established companies actually are) and they should assist you. Being a first time importer are tough , in our average service level culture. ( An international established company might not intertain too many quiries , since they are tight up with their regular stable biz and staffs may only trained to handle limited sector. A smaller local forwarding company may then have limitation on handling your requirement in Italy or oversea.
Malaysia custom import/export regulation allow shipper to appoint only 3 custom broker at a time. You are new , and you should start to select and get to know an agent. I always suggest new customer to use an agent closest to their office possible for easy monitoring and documents handling.
You can always get one from the association http://joffa.net or http://www.sffla.com/
Hi VK,
I totally agree with you..I have been sourcing around and request for quotations..Once again, thanks for the link and i am sure it will be helpful. Thanks for all the info and advise.
i would like to import snooker table from australia to malaysia. can you suggest me one of the carrier your
provided?
Hi,
What will be your shipping term with seller?
You may check from company listed in http://www.sffla.com/ should your goods to be import into Malaysia via Port Klang.
Snooker table eventhough is a sport equipment , but it have its own custom tariff and may classified at a category of funfair, tables or parlour games. May subjected to 30% import duties and approval permit from the ministry of finance. Should this is your first import , suggest to check with the relevant department.

1. Port of los angeles,USA
2. Busan port, KOREA

It would be of great help if you could furnish me with the info's. Thank you very much VK!
Hi, how about the charges in 2013? I heard many complained that many type of charges had been increased? If yes, what is SAM doing?
VK,
Thank you for such an insightful post. Just wondering if the ocean freight rates posted above are inclusive of FAF/CAF/YAS etc surcharges?
Ocean freight indicated here are inclusive shipping line surcharges but subjected to local Port of Loading and Port Of discharging charges.

Hi Stephanie, OCEAN FREIGHT ONLY from Port Klang to Bandar Abbas for Month of May would be at a range of USD800/20ft subject to local both end. There is talk of increase after 14th May , but i guess market will not make it. Export demand is slow this May.

Hi VK,
Good day!
I would like to find out the ocean freight rate on the ISO tank via Port Kelang. Destination: (1) Tokyo (2) Taiwan based ports. Do you have the indication rate for this?
Regards,
Calvin
Hi Calvin, sorry that i do not have any indication on ISO Tank. ISO tank rate is determined by cleaning cost(type of your intended cargo) ,special requirement such as heating and etc, the tank operator traffic viability toward your destinations matches the type of tank availability and requirement (food grade , kosher or non and etc), the tank operator leasing and other running cost . Ocean freight is only a portion cost out of it. However if you ever ship with a regular ISO Tank operator currently, your rate will usually proportional with the change of the ocean freight if any against previous month.
Hi VK,
I want to ship my car plus other items and would require a 20ft container.
How much would it cost me to ship my belongings in a 20ft container from Port Klang to Kuching, Sarawak? You my reply on this thread or to my email at epiphone_78@yahoo.com. Thank you!
Hi, Personal effect shipment. I expect you will need labours for the job. To send a container PKL to Kuching port , (car and personal effect). There are numerous tranfer and job involved .The activities involved pick up cargo from your premises to a warehouse , for stuffing, there are warehouse, trucking and labour charges)+ Ocean Freight PKL to Kuching Port (Hazardous - unless allow car to run till dry (no fuel) Or else consider cargo IMO class 9, UN3166- DG class 3 goods . This sector will cost you approximately RM6500 to RM7500 depend your goods volume pick location and how many labour needed.( Do not include packing, expect all items is properly packed in cartons and per units basis) Upon arriving Kuching Port ,you will still need to unstuff the goods . There you will expect another charges of RM4000 to RM5000 on local unstuffing, warehouse and delivery to final location around town area. I would said if a full 20ft container load of personal effect with a car , you will expect to pay at least RM11,500 to RM12,500.

Thank you,

waiken.iv@gmail.com

Hi Ken, base on your cargo size 400kg, 2.5sqft ? (2.5m3). I guess you mean you need LCL service. (Correct me if i am wrong).
I would suggest you to check and seek a help from a freiht forwarder. Avoid planning the cargo to transit Port Klang . Reason is Domestic shipment between Port Klang to East Malaysia , was consolidated outside the Free Zone area. You cargo import from China into Port Klang cannot be taken out from the Port Free Zone (without custom clearance and other procedure). It will lead to high handling cost and inconveniences.
A freight forwarder will most probably transit your China import to Singapore. Transship in Singapore and send to Tawau or any available East Malaysia Port. From there , they will re-distribute your cargo to Tawau.
Try to insist your supplier to send your cargo up to Tawau. I am sure they will able to get you the service.
Very nice and also you can see:
Ocean freight rates are largely dependent on the prices of oil, other charges and many more such things. The ocean freight differs from company to company depending on the currency and other things. Freight audit bill is prepared for every company separately. Freight bill audit is done through many ways.

Mr vk, PLEASE kindly could you update American and Brazilian Seaport Rates too those which is major imports are being done !
Currently i require rates for Panama market
thank you
Regards,
Ajay
Hi Wan, 1000kgs, how many m3? a 20ft container can load up to 26tons and 33m3 . I do not think you need a full container load. (which will cost you RM8 to RM10K depend on extend of service you need. You may consider LCL load per m3 basis, probably with RM350 to RM400 per m3 depend on extend services, pick up and delivery address. (lead time about 2 weeks). but if urgent, the only option is Airfreight and will not be cheap. Will be at least RM7 to RM8 or more/kg basis. Regret that i cannot give more details in listing , as i do not have much details of your cargo and believe you will be contacted by forwarders ,since you did leave your contact here.
Hi Ajay, Thanks for coming back to the blogs . I will update more sectors soon
Hi,
I intend to ship goods from Seoul to JB. Do you have any contact who can provide all-in-one service? Prefer door-to-door delivery.
Another query that I have is will it be cheaper that I ship my goods to Guangzhou China and then route back to JB as I do have a shipping agent in Guangzhou who is already very familiar with delivery to my place in JB. But I heard that importing goods to China is very complicated. Is this true?

what about ocean freight for new zealand and pacific islands ?
Hi, i would not comment on China import export procedure , but cost will definitely more expensive for having double handling. Seoul/Malaysia traffic are common and regular. You should have no problem getting a quote even from shipper in Seoul to sell you the goods up to your door. Korea/Malaysia freight biz is very competitive and there are many Korean base forwarders in Malaysia beside local and other international forwarder handling this regular traffic. Contact your forwarder or any forwarder office. They will able to help.
Dear VK,
Thanks for providing us such informative blog for reference!
I would like to import Coir Pith and Coir Fibre for Cameron farmers.Port of Loading will be from Tuticorin Port (Tamil Nadu).Ps advise to which port is less expensive (port klang or penang port), as from your guideline for haulage service charge, consider that from Penang(RM3080) is cheaper than Port Klang(RM3242).I'll be import about 4 X 40'HC containers.
Kindly advise the freight charges, and suitable port of discharge, thanks!
Best Regards,
Ms.Ooi
Hi Ms.Ooi, I would suggest Port Klang discharge. Ocean freight will be cheaper and haulage may be negotiable
Hi VK,
Do you know approx. how long it takes for a ship from port Klang to Labuan? I bought some things from KL but the sender has sent these items via sea (Pos Malaysia).
Hi Pat, Thank you for reading and stopping by. Port Klang to Labuan will take average 7 days sea passage. Taking consideration of export clearance , cargo stuffing , import at Labuan clearance , container unstuffing , You will have to be prepare for an average of 2 weeks wait.

Dear VK,
We have a buyer from South Africa and request for FOB. We currently only deal with Exwork. May I know if we are to offer goods in FOB,, which port would you suggest - Port Klang or Pasir Gudang/ Tanjung Pelepas Port ( we are based in JB). What would normally be the mark up of FOB as compared to Exw? Is there any other cost/ expense to consider. Thank you very much.
-Sue
Hi Sue, from ex-work to FOB , there are large changes in responsibility and costing. FOB terms means, you have to pay all related local export charges, included stuffing, securing, trucking and etc... At such you have to look at a port the cheapest , nearest to your factory. ( in Johor). In term of cost, if possible cost into your products all possible export points charges . Buyer may insist Port Klang loading if there is urgency, or connection availability or some even due to cheaper ocean freight. Therefore your selling terms should always come with a point. eg. FOB Pasir Gudang, or FOB Tanjung Pelepas, or FOB Port Klang.. etc.
***Incoterms for your information***.
Ex Works ( or sometime spelled as Ex-Factory)
Buyer responsible for loading at factory ( although most of the simpler stuffing activities , seller may just do it . BUT this do to waive buyer from the responsibility at any cost ), export inland transport , export custom clearance and port charges, cargo insurance, export terminal charges, Freight charges, import custom clearance and port charges, custom duty & taxes, import inland trucking and unloading at final destination
FOB ( Free On Board)
Seller responsible for loading at factory , export inland trucking , export custom clearance and port charges.
Buyer responsible for Freight charges, cargo insurance, import custom clearance and port charges, custom duty & taxes, Import inland trucking and unloading at final destination
Dear VK,
Thanks.
Very informative indeed, could you recommend any competitive forwarding+shipping agent that regularly serve this route (port klang -miri)?

Hi VK,
I have two questions.
1) I need transport logistics within Malaysia to pick up PKS (Palm Kernel Shell) from palm mills and deliver to a land located at Port Klang West Port. Can you suggest transport companies that can handle this?
Any idea how much a 30 ton lorry to carry this load will cost from
- segamat to Port Klang
- Kota Tinggi to port klang
- Labu (selangor) to Port klang
2) To ship this out to europe, we need to lease a dry bulk cargo hold. Do you know of any ship brokers that are reliable. So far the ones I have spoken to have take all the details but FAIL to get back to us on costings etc. Its been 2 months since.
Thanks.

Hi EV, Thanks for dropping by . A suitable transport would be 40ft trailer ( maximum load 20 tons) per trip. There is not 30tons capacity trailer available. You may expect at least RM1800 to RM2200 per trip from the Johor location you mentioned to Port Klang. From Labu ,Negeri may expect about RM800 per trip.
Knowing logistics cost contribute largest share of the total exporting cost, you may have to source for all opportunity such as should there is any south bound project involve trucks movement (empty returning truck may accept great discount to carry your goods on return),and of course if it meet your delivery time . And on your other question , on bulk vessel. Unless your volume is large enough to charter the whole vessel or justify to call in the vessel , you will have to wait. There is no fix schedule(regular) bulk vessel calling Port Klang to Europe.I believe your current forwarder may have already do their best.

Hi,

Hi,
I need to ship jet ski from Preston, Australia to Langkawi.
Weight: 184 kg
L x W x H: 279cm x 118cm x 104cm
Quantity: 2 units
Could you kindly assist me?
Thank you
aquaspruce@gmail.com
Hi Greg, Aquaspruce, hope you will be contacted by a logistics company soon, but dropping you inquiries here.
Base on my experience, the 4x4 toyota landcruiser and the 2 units of jet ski , can be each stuffed into a 20ft container. And there are regular container vessel service from Australia to Malaysia.
There is limited RORO service Australia to Port Klang. May be you can check with shipping line ( K-LINE).
My suggest for both are to contact a local Australia Forwarder for the arrangement. Australia and Malaysia have regular cargo movements and forwarders in both countries are very well links to each other. And i believe you need more service other than just port to port. You will need a forwarder to help you on stuffing, custom clearance, unstuffing and etc.
For the vehicle landcruiser, you need to assure to have ATA Carnet(for smooth clearance if on tour). If for import sales and etc. You MUST to obtain Malaysia Import permit prior shipment.
Port Klang is Malaysia base seaport. Would be easy to get a quote from any Australia Forwarder.
For the jet ski, shipment to Langkawi,an Australia forwarder are too , will be able to quote. Most probably the container will be ship to Penang Port (northern Port of West Malaysia). From there ,the jet ski will clear custom ( may occur sales tax 10% ) , unstuff at a warehouse and truck to Kuala Muda Jetty and later to be loaded on a ferry to Langkawi island.
Hope my brief advice may help
Hey VK,
Many thanks for the insights, however, I was wondering if there are such a thing as a bonded truck? Meaning, the Jet Ski on board the truck can still be considered to be untaxable till final destination in Langkawi where it is a tax free haven. Last, isn't there a port in Kuah Langkawi that would make it possible for me to have it shipped directly to the island via Penang Port or via Port Klang?
Tq.
Hi Aquaspruce, if your goods will only for use INSIDE Langkawi , yes you can have option to ship to Kuah Jetty Or via bonded truck to Kuala Kedah and then ferry to Langkawi (Tax free) . There could be no vessel service available direct from Australia to Kuah Jetty. You may need to ship the container to Penang Port. Your forwarder will transship the container via barge service to Kuah Jetty or unstuff the container in Penang free zone and use bonded truck transfer. Depend on your cargo nature and level of handling needed , you may request either option with different pricing. Penang is the nearest international seaport. Sorry that i cannot give us a budget cost for both option. Ask your forwarder.
HI VK, your blog is really useful! I wished I've found this earlier to get a better understanding of how all these things work.
I recently bought some exercise equipment measuring 2.2 cubic metres (actual weight about 80kg+) from US. The shipping (sea freight LTL) alone from US to Port Klang was 460USD. Which is about just as costly as the equipment itself (actually more costly).
After a long journey, the item just reached Port Klang within this week and some agent called me. I had no idea that the US supplier's shipment was actually just Port to Port (and not direct to my house).
Only then I realised I actually needed someone to help bring the item from Port Klang to my house. So since my item arrived without any agent, I got some calls from one or two agent to appoint them as agent for customs clearance, etc to release the goods.
So yesterday I proceeded with one of them and was shocked that I was quoted something like the following:
Port charges about Rm 450+/- ! (so costly?)
Forwarding and clearance about Rm200 +/- (so costly?)
Transport nearly RM200 +/-(to PJ)(so costly?)
Warehouse charges (to be known on the day of release of goods) - what is the average charge? Please don't tell me I need to pay RM100 per day for warehouse charges! The item is still there now and with CNY holidays it will be more days to come!
Duties or taxes (if any) - hopefully no duties as this is for personal use and I checked from the code 95xx - no duties I believe.
Are the above quotation reasonable? It's like another RM800 or more to pay for shipping which is pretty crazy. I called for some breakdown but I can't remember now . They said Port charges are standard charges by Port Klang. What are port charges actually? What typically make up that RM450? I can only recall that it consists of a few items RM80, Rm160+ agency fee, DO? EDI etc? I don't know what the jargons mean mostly. Also what is typically in Forwarding and clearance charge? Is it the service charges by the agent?
The item just reached earlirr this week and I have just submitted the appointment letter, pending customs approval as they said.
Please enlighten me on some of the terms above and if the quotes are reasonable. This is the first time I experienced this (and quite shocking actually - I had thought the US shipping alone would settle everything. Turns out that I still need someone to handle the shipping and clearance here). I do not wan to get conned / taken advantage of due to a lack of awareness. I will go broke paying so much. Thanks a lot for your time and useful info!
Hi Lost, so sorry to hear your encounter. Can't reply you due to travelling and Holiday. The port charges is correct and forwarding fees are in range too. Exercise equipement will have no tax. Port Storage will be calculate from the day cargo breakbulk and ready for collection. And base on 2.2m3 will probably about RM10 a day. Just take note on the shipping term in future. Even if it is mentioned delivery term Door to Door. ( eg courier service). Custom clearance are still the responsibility of the buyer. (although there are some courier service or logistics company may offer better customer service , by guiding you thru clearance without charges, BUT as per Incoterm it will still the buyer responsibility to make custom clearance, Upon this only the delivery company will arrange it up to buyer door. Therefore not wrong if you are being charge again or your goods delayed on delivery and etc.

Hi! VK,
Your blog is very useful. I am planning to import about 10 tons of spices from India(Chennai) to Port Klang and finally to my warehouse in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. The dimension size of each box of 10kg of spices as 40.64cm(Length) x 20.32cm(Width) x 15.24cm(Height). As, i am importing goods for first time ,i am a bit confused with the terms of FOB, ExWorks and CIF. I want to know which import trading procedure is more cheaper and more benefits in terms of FOB(Chennai), ExWorks(Port Klang) and CIF. How much the estimated cost will be based on mentioned terms? Kindly, pls guide and advice to opt for which terms is suitable for my case. Thanks
Rgds,
Mike

Hi Mike, you can search my other posting on Incoterm to get a clearer information on your prefered shipping term FOB, Ex-work or CIF. The seller price of each goods units will be different against different incoterms. If you are new, easier term to buy is CIF Chennai. Seller arrange everything up to Port Klang, and you only need to pay local Port Klang charges and clearance. I have posted many example of Port Klang local charges.
Take note that spices import ( consumer and process food product will subjected to relevant Authority inspection (Food Quality ) You need to prepare sample and product packaging must have ingredient listed .
Import traffic to Chennai to Port Klang is a regular route , and i believe you can easily obtain a quote from any forwarding agent, For FOB , depend on season and demand,LCL ocean freight may range from USD15 to USD20/m3 or ton whichever greater subject to local import fees Port Klang . For Ex-work would depend on pick up location, export clearance process and etc where you will have to responsible for all charges from seller door .
Hi Joe, my posting is of average market pricing. Could be cheaper or more expensive that the market. I do not sell or buy any service. I am just sharing information and to get myself updated in the industry. Ocean freight changes monthly . February rate may have differ since what i post which is for January. Ocean freights are sometimes fluctuate too depend on the shipping liners , NVOCCs or Forwarders demand on equipments positioning , or meeting performance. It is also truth that some shipper may be paying a freight up to USD500 lesser than others too ( a protecter base customer, freight tender customer, contracted customer, add hoc large volume export and etc). Another words , you can scout around forwarders if shipping lines cannot offer you, your sort after freight. Forwarding agent are different that Freight Forwarder, even though they offer the similar service. ( Freight forwarder main business is selling freight . To sustain in the market , it is volume and negotiation power they need to have with the shipping liners . They are like the wholesaler) . Forwarding agent are more of offering custom brokerage , although they still offer freighting service. But there are also many great companies who offer both forwarding and freighting service)
I have quite a traffic dropping by here. You may post your request, and i believe some will reply your mail.
Hi Eng, Thanks for posting your request. Hope you will get a reply in your mail.
Hi VK,
Could you advise here? Do not get any email reply from you.
Thanks.
Regards,
Eng
Hi Eng, I do not send any email or moderating any mail . I meant that you may receive mails from other readers who are in the industry and wanting to offer their services since you already post your email address here. I can't advice you the charges , since there is no enough information to on Ex-work requirement and i do have limited access to foreign country costing .
Hi! VK,
Thanks for your feedback for my enquiry.

Hi VK
My customer is asking me what is the cheapest way to deliver PKS from port klang to bangkok. Qty: 5000mt
What would suggest ?
Hope you can recommend me a freight company expert in this.
wmc@asia.com
HI JS, Bangkok is not far from here. 5000mt is small for conventional vessel and expensive if on containerize. How is your packaging? Loose form ? You may try to use Barge ( but need to look into protection again wet damage. There are few barge operator in Port Klang. Browse the net and will lead you to one.

Please revert ASAP.
Thanks
M. Shafique
ceo@jjlspk.com
Hi M.Shafique, Ocean Freight Port Klang to Karachi for June 2014. You may expect at a range of USD950/20ft + Heavy (Over weight add on) USD50/20ft ( for 16 to 20 tons container gross) Or + USD150/20ft (above 20 ton to max 23 tons container gross) .
Hi VK,
Just want to know how much to ship my own furnitures from bandar sunway to Bau, Kuching. Estimation goods are 10 CBM. if its cheaper to get 20", then its fine.
Thanks
HI, for only 10m3 cargo , it will be very much cheaper to send it via LCL ( consol) instead of a 20ft container. You may only need to have a budget like RM350 to RM400/m3 , depend on service level , need of labour or not ( how is your packaging type) . If with a 20ft , i guess it will not less than RM7 to RM8K at least
Hi VK,
Thanks for the absolutely fantastic blog. Keep up the good job!
I am importing from India via port of Nhava Sheva to Pasir Gudang. Most liners which i have found need approximately 10 days of arrival; with 7 0r 8 days arrive to Port Klang and balance 2 days is from Port Klang to Pasir Gudang.
I was told by CHA of my india counterpart that barge needs to be used to transfer containers from Port Klang to Pasir Gudang. However no barge can confirm the exact days it will take from Port Kling to Pasir Gudang. Is this true? Are they no frequent and regular barges servicing the two locations?
Also once a liner accepted the container, isn't the date of arrival more or less fixed with all this issue or barge already pre arranged?
Apologies as i am new at this. Please guide me along.
Which liner would be your personal recommendation of fastest delivery for the routing?
Would Pipavav be a more ideal optional port?
Thank you so much.
If you know of any good reliable agent who is very familiar with Malaysia-India procedures and shipment, would be thankful if you can please recommend some to me.
Hi VK, Thank you so much for your info. I am wondering if you have rough prices for USA ports as well?
Hi Dk, it is consider fast having 2 days to have a container transship from Port Klang to Pasir Gudang by sea. I would have put a longer time frame if asked on this , to avoid disappointment on planning. Unless you have large volume to chartered the whole barge or a feeder vessel , the connection vessel to Pasir Gudang do not wait for the transshipment container but sail once unloading and loading completed for it every voyage berth at Port Klang and is almost fixed weekly twice or more or maybe less too. Guess you know what i means. If cost is not a matter , you can have the container discharge at Port Klang and delivery to Pasir Gudang by road. ( not economical though. trucking cost will be like USD1200/container (direct unstuffing)to USD2400 (if collection empty next day) . May be you can check if any vessel call Tanjung Pelepas Port . There could be direct vessel from India Port to here. Try Maersk Line. Or try to compare a schedule of vessel/carrier who transship hub is Singapore . I think there are all more or less have the same transit time.
Hi Angie, USA is a large country and with many Inland Points , and it rate varies with commodities , contracts among agents and need FMC filing. I am not capable to put the estimate here. You may able to get some information on carrier tariff rate from their website if just for a budget cost ( tariff rate is much higher than contract or filed rate)
Dear VK,
How you done all these rate compilation? Is it possible can get this kind of rate compilation from your good side monthly?
Hi TS, the rate compilation were done from information gathered from various shipping lines. These are everage market rate ONLY. Update was done monthly or sometimes, 2 or 3 months once, if not much varies. Since shipping lines rate changes monthly to Quarterly. You may come back to the blog to check for update. However we will not responsible should the information you obtained on this blog , should it cause you any losses or claims. You may extract the information at your own risk.
HI VK,
I'm planning to ship a car to Jabel Ali, do they have Ro-Ro servies to that port?
Hi, There is no regular RORO vessel service from Port Klang to Jebel Ali. You can ship it via a 20ft GP container. May cost you around MYR6000 more or less (self drive to a warehouse locate at port area, from warehouse , stuffing into container and seafreight up to Jebel Ali Port )
VK,
thank you for your reply.
Do you have any good relationship haulage company?
I am looking for RM420 All in for Side Loader delivery up to Telok Gong with around 50-80 x 40'HQ per month.
Can we deal directly in phone or other way?
Went with Good topic with all valuable information.
Hi TS, for that price you are a lucky one , regardless by trailer or side loader. It is like every two trips free one trip. Volume if good but most driver work base on performance and commission. Although Telok Gong is near to Ports , but the depoh and port waiting time may still effect the haulier daily trips performance. Haulier will go for higher revenue trip, especially side-loader truck which are of high investment, maintenance and limited . I can't help and know anyone willing to accept this rate for now.
do you provide transportation truck from betong district thailand to kl?
VK.. do you know the freight cost from Bintulu to Port Klang or from Bintulu to Singapore?
Hi, Ocean Freight from Bintulu to Port Klang should be around MYR800 to RM1000/20ft and double for 40ft. I did not check for Singapore, but i guess it will be slightly cheaper
Hye VK, ive been transfer from KK to Kuching, i want to know the forwading cost to bring all my furniture and household to kuching sarawak.

Hi Zy, there are transporter service between Kota Kinabalu to Kuching. If your cargo are not many , suggest you check with trucking company and they can plan consol /sharing space which will be a reasonable cost. A full charter lorry may cost you RM8000 to RM10000 per trip.
Hi VK,
Loads of info in this blog and I am lost..I am new in business and looking for info pertaining shipment of garments/clothes from Delhi, India. Also info on customs duties/tax. Please advice. Thank you.
Hi VK,
I'd like to get a quote for 1 cubic meter size car part to ship from Klang to Kuching. The item needs to be crated. Hope you can reply back
Many thanks in advance!
Mahfudz
Mr. Bancho, Ocean Freight Domestic Console ( Small parcel cargo) is not expensive , but since you need the crating service there will be a warehouse charges and etc. 1 CBM may cost you RM800 to RM1000 depend on pick up location. If you make your own crate , it may only cost you half of the above. I do not offer any freight service . Charges given is only estimation from friend and agents. Hope it may help.

Hi VK,
Could you please give me some suggestion. I would like to set up my boutique, clothes import from Bangkok to Malaysia. Should i use Sea flight or by land? Estimated clothes = 300kg.
Could you please quote me the price and give me some advice. Thanks
Hi, Clothes , expect sales tax 10% and it will cost almost same shipping via Airfreight or seafreight for 300kgs or less than 1m3. Exclude freight and charges at Bangkok (request seller to sell CIF Term) . Clearance and delivery cost within Klang valley will cost you about RM700 to RM900.
HI VK,
I want to send some furniturea to brunei from malaysia, can you tell me the estimation price charges for 20' container?
hi, can advise me the suitable shipping methods and costs for my tiles, 10 pallets, total 17tons from port klang to sibu, sarawak.
besides, do we need the cargo insurance?
Hi Siewfung, with this volume , you will need to ship with a full container. (20ft GP, if you cargo is stackable or pallets size able to fit into 20ft ( internal width 2.35m, internal length 5.89m). Cargo insurance optional , but i would always suggest shipper to purchase since this is not expensive, only cost in range of 0.3% to 0.5% of the 110% cargo value
hi vk, tks for the reply.
can help me review if provided price list reasonable for shipment from port klang to sibu port (unload at sibu port)?

Hello,
Uve got some adequate info here.
Was wondering if the refer containers 20/40ft from PKG to Jeddah (port to port) how much would it be? Just indications would be helpful.
Thank you.
Do you need any airfreight service from to Kuala Lumpur, feel free to contact me at sdurga01@gmail.com or +60169033134
Hi VK, I am reading news about a potential increase in port charges by Northport and Westports. Current per-lift fee is RM230/teu that the port operator charges to the shipping line, which then passes on the cost to the shipper via a Terminal Handling Charge. Have you heard what the new per-lift fee is going to be? Because ultimately, what the port charges the shipping line is going to be paid by the shippers and manufacturers! Thanks!
