(Do not have pick or warehouse location and volume per shipment. Cant give you total charges ) Local charges and haulage you can obtain from earlier posted. I bought 3 furniture items at 109kgs from Bangkok and they just arrived at port klang. How do i get them? I called the local agent here given by the bangkok contact and they said that I've to appoint a forwarding agent. Can i not go and collect the goods myself? What are the charges like for a forwarding agent to send the items to cheras? thx

VK said...

Hi , you need to appoint a custom broker , unless you wanted to clear the goods yourself which i think not advisable. You will need to got thru few processes like , go to the EDI shop for custom forms , lining up for custom clearance and etc. In regards to the other question. What is your shipping term negotiated. If your terms with seller is DDU ( door delivery) , then you will not be charge any bill. Unless items is dutiable. In your case look like personal effect shipment. Should be no tax (subject to custom approval).

VK said...

Is your shipment LCL or Full Container. Look like LCL to me base on the volume. If your buying terms end at CFS then you need pay all applicable charge . Depends on Forwarding company , charges may be varies. Averagely you will be charges
1) LCL charges: RM40/m3
2) EDI : RM30
3) DO fees : RM110 to RM140
4) Agency fees : RM130
5) DO Collection fees : RM5
6) Forwarding fees and clearance service fees range from RM250 to RM400 ( or lesser if you negotiate)
7) Transport fees without labour around RM250 for a 1 ton lorry.

Hi,

recently, i noticed that the Bill of lading fee has increased to RM140. can you advise me or got any circular why the fee has increased to RM140. Please advise.. tq!

VK said...

Bill of lading fees have been increase from a range of between RM110/set to RM150/set. There is no official circular on this yet ( i guess it has yet to be regulated by the Industry association or body related.) Could be no one really bring this matter up the board. If you notice beside the Bill of Lading fees, Terminal Handling (THC) are varies to from RM335/20ft to RM340/20ft and RM500/40ft to RM520/20ft. It happened since early this year and it all depend individual Carriers( shipping lines)with their notifications letter. Some are still billing the old price (RM110/set and old THC fees. I think it will not be long. If market accept the increase , why not bill the extra ringgit. This have no benefit to the logistics industry . Without a standard fees, although is small, it will effect small SME and forwarders. And this can be a start of other chain effect on others fees.

hi . My name is mohana. Bro i am bringing in supplements from USA to Malaysia via ship to port klang. I need an agent to do all my clearance work at port klang. Items weighted at 1300kgs. Whats the cost for all the charges. I have my own transportation so i just need it cleared and send it to my lorry.
Kindly advice
My contact
email is mohanacrazy@yahoo.com

VK said...

Hi Mohana, first important thing you need to have before importing health or food supplements, you need to obtain a permit from the ministry of health. Without this, most forwarding company will not accept the job. Forwarding company cannot apply on your behalf , and your goods cannot clear custom.

As for the local clearance charges it should be as listed ( HOW may m3-volume of your goods? multiple with below) This will be the average charges ( BUT depend on agents , could be cheaper or more expensive)

1)THC: RM40/m3
2)EDI: RM30/set
3)DO: RM150/set
4)DO collection fees: RM5/set
5)Agency fee: RM130/set
6)Forwarding fees: RM100/shipment
7)Custom exam : RM50/shipment
8)Custom docs: RM50/shipment
9)GST 6% : RM12
10)SMK : RM30/shipment
11)EFT : RM25
Subject transport, custom duty , port storage and etc ( depend on agent value added service provided if any, such bank endorsement, documents collection and etc )

Anonymous said...

Thanks bro. I have applied but till now i don't get a proper answer from them. I have approached few supplement sellers and they also do not have proper documents but yet they can bring in the supplements. If u know any forwarding agent please email me his details.
Thanks VK

VK said...

hi, consumer products must have proper approval from the related ministry. Suggest you follow up with the authority prior import. As for forwarding agent contact you can choose a forwarder from SFFLA ( Selangor Freight Forwarders and Logistics Association) member directory http://www.sffla.com
Or may be you can check with the others seller for their forwarder contact.

hi VK. need some advice. I have a FCL of furniture coming in from Bali. i.e. reclaimed wood, metal and some fabric items. What kind of import duty and sales can i expect. Thanks.

VK said...

Hi there, for custom related tariff you can check at http://tariff.customs.gov.my .You need to key in the HS Code to obtain full information to avoid wrong result ( by word ). But recommend you to check with a forwarding agent to assure for updated information. Wooden items may need permit especially if sawn timber related. As for decorative should be at import tax 20% and sales 10% , Fabric depend on what material and metal ( not condtruction related) -usually at least 10% sales tax applied.

VK said...

Hi Encik Ridwan,

I cannot advice you the tax involve without actual goods details . FYI- final tax approval will at custom approval. Suggest you check the custom tariff at http://tariff.customs.gov.my
And also contact a forwarding agent for help. They can give you the ESTIMATION. Every individual items and group have its own tariff. Meanwhile for Permit ( it will be refer to approval from authourity to safe guard, control and etc , such as ministry of health for foods related goods, Sirim for electronic goods , consumer goods or construction and etc. All this will are stated in custom tariff. You can actually buy a custom tariff book for reference if you are regular importer Or just ring a forwarding agent for help.

Hi, i'm going to set up a camera and equipment business soon but have no idea on freight. I need to import my commodity from KL to KK, Sabah. Can i know the price per m3 for door to door service? What else should i take into consideration?
Kindly advice. Thank you.

Diana(dianaq42@hotmail.com)

VK said...

Hi Diana, Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu. Domestic shipment (no issue on tax and permit) . Since your goods will not be large, i guess. You may choose to ship LCL seafreight . Ring up any forwarder and stated your requirement. If your KK delivery point within KK town area, you should be charges more or less RM300/m3 (minimum fees =1m3 (meter(L)x meter(W)x meter(H)or 1000kgs = 1m3. And ask to include marine insurance. Will not cause you much ( will cost less than 1% of your goods value) You need to make proper packing of your goods. Best is make a wooden crate and box it up or palletize it to avoid damage . You can pay extra to get the warehouse to do it. Ask the forwarder.

Hi, I am planning to purchase some building materials (HS Code: 940600900) from Shanghai that takes up one 40ft container. Could you help to provide me what are the procedures to have the container shipped from Shanghai to Ipoh (door to door). I would like to know what is the total cost for this whole shipment (except the sales and inport tax)? I am planning to engage a freight forwarded to do the shipping, clear the custom, and then haul the container to my location in Ipoh.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

thank you.

VK said...

Hi DAVKCH,

Recommend to use RORO vessel. You can contact (Wilakota Agencies 082-336277) They are ship agent for a RORO vessel. You will need to drive your car to their Kuching warehouse receiving point and later collect it at Kota Kinabalu release point. The one important thing to take note is, if you have come personal effect items to ship together in the car , you must inform the agent prior booking for custom clearance, or else hugh custom penalty will occur , if found. ( not recommended to ship personal inside the car. The agent no liable for damage or loss if any) . Total budget price , will be at range of RM2500 to RM3000 for the job.

VK said...

Hi Choonhooi,

Import from Shanghai a 40ft container. Prefabricated buildling items, you may get some tax discount if your China supplier can give you supporting docs for ACFTA agreement.

Base on shipping term FOB Shanghai (you need to purchase cargo insurance )Loading and local charges as China on supplier account. Ocean Freight approximately USD650 (RM2080) for a 40ft Shanghai to Port Klang.

Trucking Port Klang to Ipoh approximately RM5200 Or RM2600 if you immediate unstuff within 4 hrs. Trailer wait and return to Port Klang.

Recommend you to look for a forwarder in Ipoh itself (usually they have offices in Port Klang) You can get better costing as they usually have regular traffic rather than those from Port Klang , truck will be MTY return , causing double fees to as high as RM5200/container.

Other charges for Port clearance at Port Klang as followed. ( Estimated ONLY. Actual depend on individual forwarder)

1)THC: RM520/40ft
2)EDI: RM30/set
3)DO: RM150/set
4)DO collection fees: RM5/set
5)Agency fee: RM130/set
6)Forwarding fees: RM150/shipment
7)Custom exam : RM100/container
8)Custom docs: RM50/set
9)GST 6% : RM18
10)SMK : RM30/shipment
11)EFT : RM25
Subject transport , custom duty , port storage and etc ( depend on agent value added service provided if any, such bank endorsement, documents collection and etc )

HI VK,

Firstly, I think you have a wonderful BLOG here which might be helpful for some 1st timers here.

I'm intending to deliver 2000 litres of palm oil in 100 containers of plastic Jerry cans - 25 litres each. I assume this can be packed in 2 wooden pallets. Basis, appreciate if you can give me the breakdown cost (estimated)for delivery to Siem Reap, Cambodia from Port Kelang - LCL term.

VK said...

You can make a LCL booking up to Phnom Penh CFS. ( Consignee will have to clear and collect from here to Siem Reap)

I would suggest you split the goods into more pallet with proper lash and stretch film wrapped ( best is at only one stacking and layer a board before stacking). LCL shipment involve many shifting. The jerrycan may slip during movement. Unfit packing may cause you extra charges for re-packing at warehouse .

Ocean freight for LCL PKL to Phnom Penh is about USD35 to USD40/ m3.

Other charges at Port Klang(average)
Shipper to provide export permit ( Some categories of Palm oil produce need export permit).

1)THC: RM40/m3
2)EDI: RM30/set
3)BL: RM150/set
4)Telex fees if needed: RM80/set
5)Forwarding fees: RM100/shipment
6)Custom exam : RM50/shipment
7)Custom docs: RM50/shipment
8)GST 6% : RM12
9)SMK : RM30/shipment
10)Transport within Klang valley : RM250 up to 3 tons (depend on delivery address)

VK said...

LCL ( less container load) Your goods will be sharing with other goods consolidated into a GP container. Your cargo size (39.4'x60'x21.2')= 12m x 18m x 6m? Should be in inches i guess ( 1m x 1.53m x 0.53m) = 0.81m3 (120kgs).Base on your cargo size, you can either opt for Airfreight or Seafreight (Not big varies if you dont mind pay some extra for faster delivery)

By flight depend on your pick up point in USA. Would take 4 to 7days. By seafreight could up 30 to 45 days.
You can contact any freight forward company you know located in Malaysia. They have representative in USA to handle for you. Contact a few for price comparison . Also request the seller to offer you the shipping cost to compare.
Base on your volume ,Door to Door cost will not be less than RM2000 or could be more depend on your USA pick up point.

Hello VK,

I have some used personal effects that need to be cleared at port klang. Could you advice me on the average total cost of appointing an agent to do custom clearance (no need to transfer to my door)?

Four standard boxes(L41xW31xH51cm each)
Total Weight: 52kgs

Which forwarding agent would you recommend?

VK said...

Hi, As for forwarding agent contact you can choose a forwarder from SFFLA ( Selangor Freight Forwarders and Logistics Association) member directory http://www.sffla.com

Your consignment , only a one time shipment ( personal effect) and at a minimum volume, would also suggest you request the consolidator ( the carrier who delivery your goods to Port Klang) to do the clearance. Average below cost applied. Not much varies who do the clearance. BUT Be sure no prohibited items .

Subject to other charges such as ocean freight and port of origin charges (depend on your shipment term)

1)THC: RM40/m3
2)EDI: RM30/set
3)DO: RM110/set
4)DO collection fees: RM5/set
5)Agency fee: RM130/set
6)Forwarding fees: RM150/shipment
7)Custom exam : RM100/shipment
8)Custom docs: RM50/shipment
9)GST 6% : RM12
10)SMK : RM30/shipment
11)EFT : RM25
12)Transport within Klang valley : RM250 up to 3 tons (depend on delivery address) If needed.

Hello VK,

Thanks for your prompt reply.
My shipping agent did give me an option to appoint another agent to do the custom clearance because theirs are simply too expensive....-.-

Also want to ask you what does DO original mean ar? What document is this?

VK said...

Hi, your consignment is a personal effect.( a one time shipment). This could be a reason you will be charged some extra. Try to negotiate and inform you be helpful and will to involve (such as collection of document and deliver to the company and etc). But i do not recommend. The time spend and travelling cost will back to same later on your pocket.

On your other question .DO Original = Delivery Order (Original copy). You will get this from the carrier you ship the cargo with on exchange with the original Bill Of Lading and full payment on freight and all local applicable carrier charge. The DO is a document you need to exchange for your goods.

Ex-Port Klang to Trieste/Antwerp/Salalah/Qaboos/Hongkong

VK said...

Averagely December 2012 rate per below
Ex-Port Klang to Trieste (USD1200/20ft & USD2400/40ft, PKL to Antwerp (USD1400/20ft & USD2700/40ft, PKL to Hongkong (USD50/20ft & USD100/40ft). Sorry that i have no update on PKL to Salalah and Qaboos

Above is only the Ocean freight, you need to add on other local charges , custom clearance and transportation.

Sawm timber usually enjoy special rate due to good export volume (number of containers per shipment). Ask the shipping line for timber rate. You may get up to a 25% cheaper rate than regular other cargo rates. Since you are a new exporter, you may work with a timber specialize freigt forwarder for good rate ( since they have contract and bulk rate) + export clearance familiarisation. Ask around the market you will know them.

Export sawm timber need MTIB approval (Malaysia Timber Industry Board)

Hi there,

You've got a great blog here!

I would like to know what are the transport charges if I were to import fitness equipments from China?

This is my first time importing goods from China.

Can I get a broker to settle the logistics?

Pls advice.

VK said...

China is a big country. Transport charges varies from every pick up point. Since you are first time importer , would suggest you appoint an international freight forward to handle your shipment.
Especially if you purchasing from a trader or small exporter in China , there will involve more communication than just buying and paying , when come to exporter regulation in China and other tax excemption tariff if applicable

Hi VK,

It's a very informative and helpful blog of yours. Hope you can answer my query about DO:

Could it be possible there is more than one DO in a single shipment? For example if someone imports 10 containers (same item) at one time.

TQ
Steve

VK said...

Hi Steve,
Number of the Bill Of Lading issued for the shipment determine number of DO release. DO will be release to a party first presented the original endorsed Bill of Lading.

If you want more than one DO for a shipment of 10 containers, you need to split the shipment during booking or Bill of Lading preparation.

Answering your question , yes . You can have more than one DO for a same shipment , but split into individual Bill of Lading and description. Eg. One BL/DO only for 3 containers , another BL/DO only for the balance 7 containers.
And there will be extra charges for each on documents, handling and clearance fees.(since it is consider a two different shipment)

Hi VK,

Wonderful help sir, greatly appreciate all your info. Im a first time exporter too, trying to export sawdust to Korea. Would like to know, how many containers do you think we will need for 1000 tons of sawdust (loose form, not compressed to blocks). Also what is the safest payment terms and procedure between myself and the buyer that you would suggest, considering this is a high volume and cost order?

Thank you so much.

You mentioned container. Not knowing your packaging type ( however , should it be in jumbo bag, bags or loose) you may follow below guide .Take note of broken storage space . ( means if 33m3 it does not mean you can load 33m3; due to weight limit and cargo shape.

20ft GP container ( maximum cargo weight 28000kgs , maximum volume 33cbm)
40ft GP container ( maximum cargo weight 28000kgs , maximum volume 67cbm)
40ft HC container (maximum cargo weight 28000kgs , maximum volume 76cbm)

For sales term , best is Payment in advance, if not go by the Bank . Check with local bank for shipping credit service. As for Freight , go for Freight collect -FOB term. Buyer will nominate a carrier and cargo insurance. You will only responsible for the local charges, stuffing and all related charge at Port of loading till container ship onboard vessel.

Hi VK Thank you so much for the advice. Would like to know, I looked for HS code in customs tariff site. And there are a few columns that pop up i.e. import rate, export rate, sales tax, excise, etc. It is nil for my search for all these columns except "Export Rate" which shows 10%. What does this mean, and how do I include this into the price of my export to buyers? How is export rate calculated and what is the difference between export rate and sales tax, excise etc.?

VK said...

Yes, you will need to cost in the 10% export tax. Generally Import ,export and sales tax are calculated by cargo value while excise duty on cargo quantity.

Prashanth Kay said...

Hi Vk, thanks again. So how do i value my cargo? Does customs have a fixed value, and how do I find out? Or is this whatever price I am charging my client, which should be stated? Bit unclear abt this process, sorry.

VK said...

If your shipping term
CnF , cost and freight + (×10% export tax) or CIF , cost, insurance and freight +(×10% export tax) or FOB , cost +(×10% export tax) and so on for ex-work, FCA term and etc. Export and import tax calculated from your commercial invoice .Excise duty may have fix value × unit of quantity. And sales tax calculated from total of all tax + commercial invoice value.

Dear VK,

I am first importer to import a set of laser cutting machine from a of supplier in Shandong, China. The net package is 5.712CBM,gross weight 750KG with wooden box packaging.
Question 1: Have any taxes for importing laser cutting machine?
Question 2: How do I clear my machine from custom in Port Klang? What is clearence steps? (Sorry, I am fresh here)And besides DO, any others documents need to present when clearence my machine? Thanks.

Regards,
Neoloh

VK said...

Hi Mike, lock sets incur import duty 25% and sales tax 10% . Calculated base on per kg basis.

Other charges you can obtain from my other posting.

VK said...

Hi Neo,
Machinery are usually tax free. laser cutting machine will be tax free.
First time importer you need to appoint a custom broker to assist on the clearance. This will take up to 3 working days for approval processing. You need to get this done prior cargo arrival to avoid storage and other delay charges.
You may check with a custom broker to obtain the clearance charges.( My other posting charges can be taken as a guide) I always suggest , to appoint a company you know or near your office ( for easy documentation and etc ) for first timer.
If you need help you can obtain forwarding agent contact from SFFLA ( Selangor Freight Forwarders and Logistics Association) member directory http://www.sffla.com

Hi Tien, what are the items you import? If the permit you mentioned you do not have is relate to your goods, then you should first apply the permit with relevant authority. Let say the price is 1000 usd. What i must do in order to get the stuff from there to my house? What is the estimated cost using sea and need some one transport it from port klang to ipoh.

VK said...

Hi there, in regards to import of clothing and handicraft. You will expect 10% sales tax on the items at least. (depend on actual items you bring in) Eg. Clothing suit can be of many categories and materials made. While for handicrafts are too , what materials wood?, metal? clay ? house use? You are advice to appoint a forwarding agent . Get a recommendation from someone you know if you are new importer.

VK said...

Hi Mr. Al Hafiz Shah,

Food supplement need import permit from the Health Ministry. You need to first obtain this before import. Since it is only 50kgs , why not try courier service? If you want to use a freight forwarder service , you will expect more or less RM3500 to RM4000 for this Airfreight consignment ( 50 kgs best use airfreight) How big is the consignment? (Size of package) If large then go by Seafreight . Contact a forwarder for help.
BUT TAKE NOTE of the import permit to be obtain first.

I got quote from forwarder/custom broker that includes "multistop for custom check". What is that? Are there any fees that we can negotiate with forwarder/custom broker?

VK said...

Hi, it could be just another charge code for the service provided. You need to clarify this with your forwarder.
Service fees usually negotiable .Other charges not negotiable are those with official receipt, such as port bills of storage and container removal and etc.

Hi VK,

I appreciated you for all your comments. It seems that you are an expert in logistics.

I am based in Penang, and I am trying to import some samples from California, USA. The samples consist of food items (canned, packaged, processed), household hold (cleaning, detergent) and personal care (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, lotion), and they will be palletized (1/2 of normal pallet).

What do I need to do in terms of appointing forwarding agent and so on? This is my first time importing goods, so I need detail explanations.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Peter

VK said...

Hi Peter, suggest you contact a few forwarding companies in Penang . And work with one who willing to guide you thru. You need to obtain relevent permit on your own. (from the Ministry of Health and MAQIS ) depend of the type of items you bring in.

Anonymous said...

Hi VK,

Thank you for the reply. Do I need permit for importing personal care and household products such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste and cleaning agents?

Best,

Peter

VK said...

Yes, you need permit. How convincing are you this is for your personal use? Even if it is a special shampoo due to medication description by doctor abroad and no available to be sold in Malaysia , you still need to obtain a permit.
You can only declare this as personal effect items if you are moving back from abroad and items are not new and at your consuming quantity.

Anonymous said...

Dear VK,

Thank you for the prompt reply again. No, it is not for personal use. I am trying to import the goods for sale within Malaysia. First, I am trying to bringing in a small quantity of samples first.

Best,

Peter

VK said...

You should get the MSDS( material Safety Data Sheet) of the products or some imformation, and applied permit with the DOH. At least pre-inform and obtain approval to get in the samples. Samples are small quantities, but still need consumer to test it right? If you are keen on the biz, you should applied for relevant approve asap, since you will need to get this approval soon or later. The process is fast and not difficult.

Anonymous said...

Dear VK,

Once again I really appreciated your prompt reply. You have been a big help.
Some of the samples are already in the market, and I am trying to bring them in for evaluation purposes. My vendor in the US informed me that MSDSs are available. Do I need to visit MOH personally to apply for the permits?

could you advise what is the easiest way to arrange the shipment from Bangkok & estimated shipping cost (it wont fill the whole freight container)

many thanks

VK said...

Hi Tee,

28mt is gross container weight or nett cargo weight?. You cannot load more than allowed as stated on the container CSC plate. For an upgrade 30mt -20ft container , max you can load is 26mt more or less . So long it's within the CSC plate stated will be ok and no extra charges. If over ,you may encounter many inconveniences and subjected to acceptance by revelant service provider, idenmity issuing to port , vessel and etc and risk of claims. Any accident if happen at your account. Container will be weigh during port entry and you cannot hide this.

VK said...

Hi Yasmeen, what is your shipping term ? Your cargo would appear to be around 0.5m3 to 1m3 ( approximately 240kgs (depend the final actual box- i guess you will box up all items into 1 unit, since there are small) .
If your seller sell to you CIF up to Malaysia ( you responsible only on the local Malaysia charges) , then seafreight or airfreight will come to almost same (may around RM800 more or less- subject custom tax if any ( opt for Airfreight for fast arrival and easy handling) .
If you are buying FOB and cargo not urgent ( you responsible for pick up from USA)Go for seafreight. You will save more than 1/2 the cost comparing with use of Airfreight.

VK said...

Hi Journey of a lady,

No worry . Nothing impossible, so long there is a pay for the service. You can contact a freight forwarder ( usually the shop owner have one ) If not you get one.

You can liase with the forwarder to collect the goods from each respective point (or a single point where you already place it ( eg, the hotel) . They can arrange shipment back to where you want it be. A Volume Less than a container load ( will be ship as LCL) . (Consol with other goods)

I'm planning to ship my belongings back from USA to Malaysia. Hope you can answer my questions. Their total weight is below 600 pounds. But after they are palletized their weight and size would increase.

What do you think would be an approximate total quote for custom clearance of my things at Port Klang and delivery to home in Shah Alam? Would appreciate a breakdown of the price.

Do I really need a Malaysian forwarding agent to help with custom clearance at Port Klang, Malaysia? Can I do it myself? Would it get more complicated and costly if I did it myself?

If I have unused things that I bought several years ago, are they taxable? I do not have the receipts to prove I bought them years ago.

Which forwarding agent would you recommend in Malaysia to provide the "Port Klang to the house service?" The house is about half and hour drive from Port Klang.

If you can recommend a company for a door to door service for personal effects from California to Port Klang Malaysia, please do so too.

Thank you!

VK said...

Hi, You are using a forwarder service in USA for your export. Do they handle door to door ( I believe they do ). The US Forwarder will able to make delivery up to your door step in Malaysia. They have agent network in Malaysia. Request for their service.
You can do your own clearance, but I believe you will not want to go thru the process.( My advice is appoint a forwarding agent to do the work. This is not an over the counter transaction).

Personal effect shipment is no dutiable, as long as it is not new , contraband items or same items huge quantities (more for sales) Local Port Klang charges and delivery for cargo less than 2m3 would be approximatelt RM1000 or less.

Hello,

I would like to ask a question regarding customs duty.

If you've have paid customs duty but you found out later on that it is the wrong tariff code, is it possible to claim your duty back? Is there a procedure and time frame to dispute and claim back that amount paid?

Thanks.

VK said...

Ocean Freight from Guangzhou to Port Klang alone is approximately USD550/20ft (subject to export and import local and clearance charges ) Ceramic tiles imported must be of finished product (not unpolish which need import permit) Depend on type of tiles custom import tax is around 60% and salex tax 10%. But if your supplier can provide Coo(Certificate of Origin from China - China FTA with Malaysia) you only need to pay sales tax.

VK said...

Hi Mei, wrong tariff declaration is an offense and liable for custom penalty , although your case is different than those of cheating with wrong tariff to escape tax. You can check with the custom department with relevant prove of your import but i would say, it will take long and difficult process and you may as well just forget about it. Ask your custom broker about it, since declaration is done by them.

Hi Nam Seng, you can contact the shipping line office . They will provide you the demurage tariff calculation or your forwading agent. Both can help. There will also be Port Storage and removal charges .

but i dunno why our shipping agent keep rejecting provide the info, that's why i'm asking you here... maybe because we're firt time dealing with them? today is the deadline, should start counting tomorrow... somemore the goods need to be in frozen storage, should cost us a bomb!

VK said...

Hi nam seng , who is the shipping agent? A forwarder or shipping line? This is our country customer service standard. Rejecting request or do not want to help or no nothing, bad training? You have the right to know. Talk to the import salesman ,he will help if he is a good salesman.

Since there could be some varies between carrier , but should be at below range . Check this link for the demurage http://www.dnd.com.my/cms/global_detention_charges.jsp or from a friendly carrier site, eg www.oocl.com , go to malaysia, on the left menu, look for demurage and detention . Listed whole malaysia tariff of theirs.

Reefer container will incur at port monitoring , electricity ,storage and extra movement fees for over stay . Www.johorport.com.my go to site footer , resource centre, tariff and rate. You contact them for an answer too. There should be emc rm65/20ft,rm110/hc, monitoring and electricity rm105/20ft,rm130/hc, per shift (8 hourly), storage rm4/20ft,rm8/40ft per day. Hope this may help .

nam seng said...

thanks so much.
just to ask if there's anybody just left the goods at the port and didn't do anything? will there be penalty or the importer will be blacklisted?

VK said...

Hi Nam Seng, leaving the goods in the port is no at all a solution. Charges are building up daily . I do not know what goods you brought in and what reason you cannot get a permit. If you do not make a clear bill on this cargo of container, you will not able to have your next import or any transaction with the shipping line, forwarding agent or the port. Should your next consignment have arrived Malaysia, you will still have to clear all pending bills before your new shipment being released.
Shipping line have the right to aution off your goods to recover their service fees, but again , is your cargo valuable or allowed to be imported. At a norm situtation, if the cargo is prohibited by the authority to be imported but already landed ,it got to be return back to Port of Origin (not other country or port) . OR request for disposal, if allowed ( most of the time not allow ,depend of your type of goods. The country cannot be use as a dumping ground).Hope your consignment is not in either case. Knowing the daily charges, you should act fast on the permit and any other decision.

Hi Janey, I do not have much information on your cargo, if base on 525kgs via Air PJ to Hanoi town area , is may cost approximately RM5500 to RM6500 . Via Sea freight PJ to Hanoi town are will cost average RM1200 to RM1300/rt (m3)

VK said...

Hi, in regards to the poultry feeds from Australia. USD150/ton. I guess inclusive of freight, loading port export charges and jumbo bag price. I cannot advice on products CIF price but for freight charges from Australia to Port Klang on conventional will approximately per below:
Jumbo bags usually are come at 1 mts per bag and freight rate varies somewhere probably USD30 to USD60/rvt (m3 or tonne whichever greater) . It again depends on the vessel owner costing and nos of vessel deployed and demand in such service route. If the liner is on their route, it could be cheaper or else adhoc call liner may work it at an adhoc call port cost + deviation

Unknown said...

Anybody knows about Deconsol fee?

I bought goods on CIF term and it came by sea.. and the shipping line company asked for this fee which I think it's my responsibility to pay this.

Unknown said...

Sorry I mean it's not my call to pay for such fee.

Of course, there are other charges like THC, Handling, Facilities, CFS, Status, D/O fee.

VK said...

Hi Patty, your import is into Port Klang? You are sharing your container with other importers and distribute the goods from CFS ? If you are the single importer , you will only be charges LCL charges (for less a container load )or the THC (Full contianer load) plus the other mentioned local charges.

Hi, in regard to import of stone carving. Depend on type of stone,it will incur 30% import tax. On the packaging, it will be subjective, the producer should know better.Be it using a proper cushioning materials with a strong outer container ( a full wooden crate maybe)to protect your shipment fully. Make sure you have enough cushioning materials to ensure that the contents do not move when you shake the container.

On the cargo insurance, beside the deductibles maybe higher than those damaged item values ,you need must know unless there is external damage visible, internal damage is subjective.

What is generally excluded in a Marine Cargo Insurance Policy?

Loss or damage due to Inherent Vice , Delay, Insufficiency of packing, loss or damage due to financial default or insolvency of the ship owner etc.

Therefore fragile goods, special attention to be taken on the packaging.

On the logistics cost, 500kgs ( let said about base on 1m3 , it may cost approximately RM2500 (pick up Bangkok area seafreight to Port Klang area with delivery within Klang valley, subject to custom duty. Hope this may give you a guide. Suggest you contact a forwarder to work on this, since you are a newbies.

1 pallet 289 kg 120 x 180 x 70 cm
total 797 kg
I need these two pallets shipped duty free to Langkawi. I have the options to ship by sea to Duty free Langkawi but the company is not reliable with the sailing time which will be "around mid June"
Any other option? i.e. road
transport for instance.

Hi prettycai17, yes you can always opt for road transportation . Use bonded trucking is duty unpaid. Road trucking will end at Kuala Kedah jetty . From there cargo will be transfered to Langkawi. Check with a Forwarding company located at Kuala Kedah or Langkawi. They have the trucking and total service.

Dear VJ,
Thanks for your advice. is it starch is under category flour so need the permit?
Actually is modified starch that i ask my TW sifu share his stock for me first, coz i can't find locally so far. Would this be the same case need the permit as well?

Regards,stanley.

VK said...

Hi Stanley , for food or consumer produce , need import permit for safety and control . Eg. All plants or its produce like fruits ( not process ) need approval permit from MAQIS - ministry of agriculture. While those process food or consumer product will need permit from the ministry of health . You can check custom tariff and permit requirement at www.tariff.customs.gov.my . Hope this may explain.

Thanks VJ, I have wrote to MOH for guidance.
Btw, do you know of any forwarder agent familiar with food clearence in Pg?

thanks again. Stanley

Hi VK,

May I know how much is the charges of container damage? (There is a hole on the wall)
How could I avoid to pay it since it is not caused by us? There was no any damages when we received it.

HH

VK said...

Hi, no hole in container during receive but later appeared. If there is not handling damage by knocking and etc, most probably just a wear and tear. Old rusted point , felt of and left a hole.Take evidence photo of the rusted hole and protest not to take responsible. If the hole is small and tiny, usually a patching can be done and cost within RM100 only.

Hi VK,

We are first time import item from China, no experience in import in goods from China before.

If i were to import some goods from Tianjin Port (my supplier FOB Tianjin Port, and my goods only takes about 1cbm of cargo space), what will be my shipping cost from tianjin port to Puchong, Selangor?

My goods are PVC curtain. Pls advise, Thank you.

VK said...

HI, FOB Tianjin , means you responsible for Ocean Freight, Insurance and local charges at Port Klang. For 1 m3 of goods you will expect to pay around RM950 to RM1000++ depend on space demand in China for Tianjin CFS to Puchong door. Subject to Insurance (calculated at average premium 0.4% of 110% cargo value or minimum RM60 average) if need. Custom duty at Port Klang 20% import duty and sales tax 10% if it is a buider's ware.

preeco said...

I see. If i ask supplier to send to port klang, he pay the ocean freight and every charges that occured during the process, then what should i do to collect my cargo at port klang? and roughly how much for a cargo of 1cbm (maybe in 1 or 2 pallet)?

VK said...

Hi Preeco, if you buying CIF Tianjin. Mean you pay only Port Klang local charges. For 1m3 LCL , you will expect to be billed about RM900 +- . Ocean Freight Tianjin to Port Klang for LCL should around USD20 to USD30 average per m3

hi Vk..

I want to import baby product from usa..feeding bottles..do i need to apply premit to import this? can you calculate roughly the shipping cost to malaysia n custom clearance? the dimension of the box is 13.7inch x 6.8inch x 6.6inch weight 1.9 pound. i plan to import 20 boxes of them..what is the best way to import this item in courrier service or seefrieght? since the company i bought this item does not offer shipping to malaysia, how do i go about it? thanks

VK said...

Hi workaholic mama, plastic baby feeding bottle need permit from the Director of Enviromental Quality. And expected tax of 20% import duty and 10% sales tax. Base on your dimension and quantity given , it should reach an estimated chargable weight about 36kgs .No much different in cost for sea or air, but at this volume , usually ship via airfreight . Try to request seller to quote us on courier service. If you use normal Airfreight service from a forwarder ( depend on the pick up and delivery address), it can cost you up to RM3500 to RM4000, subject custom tax.

The charge exceeds my expected price so much.
can you please give me advice regarding the price?
The breakdown charges :
DOCUMENTATION:RM 200
ADDITIONAL SET RM5/SET :RM 100
SMK FEE:RM 100

TRANSPORT :RM 200
DUTY30%=10%SALES TAX :RM 755.54
Is this possible??

VK said...

Hi Mandy, Different agent have different charge code , but the service provide are same. I have posted few local charges in my blog, you can judge from there. There is only some increase on Market rate on Agency fees from RM130 to RM150 and DO fees from RM110 to RM150)
I guess your goods is only approximately 1m3 base on the local charges. And you have delayed long on this clearance. Storage and port charge increases daily. ( This you can request for official receipt) .
My comment , you are charged a bit on the high side , but i really cannot comment further since i do not know your cargo details and terms + what have been transpired. BUT you do have cheap transportation (for RM200 Klang to Perak ).

Self collect cargo. (Not include export charges and ocean freight-which you should have been billed at Port of Loading. and(Subject to labour cost if needed, since you have about 17 boxes )

And do I need a import permit for this? Do I apply for permit from Ministry of Health or Ministry of International Trade and Industry? Thank you.

Hi Joseph,

Yes for food items , you need to first obtain permit from MOH ( fosim). 100kgs airfreight from Europe, depend on your shipping term. If ex-work ( you pay pick up , clearance and freight) , depend on your pick up location, you will expect at least RM4000 to RM5000 . ( Eur is now over 4X of RM value) .

Hi VK,

I have just started a trading business in singapore and source from Malaysia for oversea customers.

In order to avoid the supplier deal with the buyer directly in the future, I have to hide supplier information from the buyer and visa versa. This can be done by switching the B/L.

However, I encounter 2 other problems with certification of origin and Phyto Cert which I was told will reflect the supplier information.

Need your advise for the following:

1) is the certificate of origin (CO) a must during custom clearance at Port Klang? At destination port, I understand the client do not need the CO.

2) If the CO is must at Port Klang clearance, the B/L switch will result in a different shipper and consignee between the B/L and CO at the destination, will it pose any problem at the destination port clearance. Is there a solution for this? Is there a service provide who can issue the CO without the supplier info?

3) Can the Phyto/fumigation cert supplier information be masked out during destination port clearance? or is there service provider who can provide phyto cert without any supplier information?

Thanks a million!

Really grateful for your blog, it has a wealth information....Marco

Hi VK,

Firstly, good job in helping others with import/export questions.

I am planning to import 150kg of Aluminium fabricated products (HS Code 7610900000). My company is Sole Proprietorship status. Any import prohibition / permit required? What documents do I need to provide to forwarding agent for customs clearance?

Thank you in advance.

VK said...

Hi, HC Goh, Yes. You need to first apply for a permit before import of cosmetic product. Easy process. Apply online to www.bpfk.gov.my . More of a notification .

VK said...

Hi Marco. You mention your products was origin from Malaysia and ship to oversea. ( Doesn't matter actually from where to where).
More important is what the final buyer need for custom clearance and tax exemption if any at the Port of Discharge.
1) CO or certificate of origin needed at the importation country mainly due to tax exemption and also a control to prevent some countries goods to enter into the said countries due to trade control , quality and etc.
2) Phyto/fumigation are to prevent transfer of exotic organisms (pest control) from exported or imported country
******************
CO - To apply , you must be a manufacturer with a manufacturer license and registered with MITI (a government body). Only goods made in Malaysia , export from Malaysia (with custom K2 ) can apply for CO. Believe same condition applied to all other countries too. SO CO document information cannot be amended. Or issued other than that to the manufacturer.

Phyto/fumigation not very much an issue. as shipper name can be input as your agent name in the Port Of loading. Most important is the process have taken place. There are markings on the pallets or goods gone thru the process with the certificate.

Hope above explained.

VK said...

HS code 7610900000 do not need import permit. But subject to import tax 25% and sales tax 10%. Import documents for custom clearance are packing list , commercial invoice ,Bill of lading , certificate of origin (if your seller countries in list of Malaysia free trade agreement)with this you can have discounted import duty . First time importer , you need to appoint a custom broker.

Anonymous said...

Thanks VK for answering the 7610 HS CODE question.

Inviting forwarding agents to contact me. Email : beiyer@gmail.com

VK said...

Hi Beiyer, Sorry for any inconveniences; a question raise in me. HS code 76109000 is a general code of 'others product' . i do suggest you give a more specific details of your import (Aluminium fabricated products). Your items may have a direct related hs code.At such your Forwarder will able to provide you with best Hs code proposal to the custom office.
Some aluminium complete product do not need permit, but most do, being reason Aluminium have many uses (as base item for film maker, fire arms, building , foods industries , electrical and more)The Authority may need to to know the natural business of the importer.
Question often brought up why sometime common daily use items imported may need permit. We may not realize but many illegal activities , such as drugs and explosive producer are too importing their raw materials by portion or in a complete form of other finish product and refine it to extract what they need.

Many thanks

VK said...

Hi Gaia, What type of beauty product?. Comestics, supplement? You need to first apply permit from BPFK www.bpfk.gov.my/ (Ministry of Health) . Thereafter you just need to look for a freight forwarder agent. They will guide you thru from pick up , shipment , clearance and deliver to your door. Your information given here is not sufficient for me to advice a cost.

Unknown said...

what is the difference between FOB and FCA incoterm? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

VK said...

Hi Soo, you can search in this blog with the word 'incoterm' . I have a post of commonly used incoterms.
Anwering yours

FOB ( Free On Board)
Seller responsible for loading at factory , export inland trucking , export custom clearance and port charges.
Buyer responsible for Freight charges, cargo insurance, import custom clearance and port charges, custom duty & taxes, Import inland trucking and unloading at final destination

FCA ( Free Carrier)
Usually end with a point , such as FCA Port Klang, FCA Shah Alam and etc.
Seller responsible for loading at factory to the specified point , export custom clearance and port charges
Buyer responsible for Freight charges, cargo insurance, import custom clearance and port charges , import custom duty & taxes, Import inland trucking and unloading at final destination

FCA, who pay haulage cost? Where is the specific point? If buying terms ,FCA Sungai Buloh ,eg. Then buyer pay haulage cost , since haulage require to transport the container to Port Klang. Hope this help.

Hi Ayu, I will not comment on the charges. I do not know what service have been provided and negotiated. For your other question, IID(integrated import document)or DO (charges paid for the release). Your forwarder could have total up the(THC(RM350),EDI(RM30),DO(RM150)+ some other charges)Small charges varies among carriers. You can ask for a listing. And for the container deposit it is refundable, unless you have used up the credit on container detention , damage and washing and etc. You can ask for listing. And if you are a new first time importer, you can do some shopping around to compare the charges if you have doubt.

Hi, the quotation have 3 sections, A,B and C. A and C reasonable. B i cannot comment without complete details of the service you requested. Looking at the quotation, you are buying the goods ex-work price. You may check buying FOB price from your supplier and then you can compare the charges. Your supplier will sell you slightly more expensive per units price if FOB term . But you will pay only A and C.

Custom clearance at Brunei will need attention too on the import permit. Depend on your shipping term. You may choose a forwarder who can handle both Sabah export and Brunei import. ( Export and import permit is required) .
